OVUM Lamp

The OVUM lamp is a design I created to explore material sustainability in industrial design and product creation. The intention behind the creation of this lamp was to learn about how designers might use repurposed or recycled materials to create high end products.

The OVUM lamp is constructed using papier-mâché. All of the paper used in the creation of the OVUM lamp was sourced from my studio. It is primarily composed of unused sketches, old documents and waste packaging paper.

The top of the OVUM lamp is made of White Oak scrap wood sourced from a local woodworking studio.

The bottom lampshade is held in place using repurposed bike brake cables, and a 3D printed base created using infinitely recyclable ABS plastic.

The OVUM lamp performs best when paired with a dimmable, warm light bulb. The textural elements of the lower shade are highlighted when the lamp is turned on, and thanks to the double shade system, there is no angle in which the user might be blinded by direct light.

The opaque upper shade diffuses the light gently, while the translucent lower shade allows enough light to escape to really brighten a room.

The OVUM lamp is appropriate not only for the home, but also for restaurants and bars where direct light can be disruptive.
